Accountant Resume Canada — CPA Designation Guide 2026
How to write an accountant resume in Canada. CPA designation, public vs industry accounting, software skills (QuickBooks, Sage, SAP), and what hiring managers look for.
An accountant resume in Canada leads with your CPA designation (or progress toward it), names the specific accounting software you've used, and shows dollar values in your work — budgets managed, variances identified, reporting timelines met. Accounting is a credential-first profession in Canada, and the CPA designation is the standard employers screen for in any mid-level or senior role.
CPA designation — put it in your header
The Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is granted through CPA Canada and the provincial CPA bodies. It replaced the legacy CA, CMA, and CGA designations in 2015 — you no longer need to specify which legacy designation you held.
Include your designation status directly under your name:
[Name], CPA, CGA
CPA Ontario — Active Member
If you are in the CPA PEP (Professional Education Program): *CPA Candidate — Module 4, Expected Completion [Month Year]*
For public accounting roles, if you hold a public accounting licence (PAL), include it: *Licensed Public Accountant — CPA Ontario PAL #[number]*
Public accounting vs industry: two different resumes
Public accounting (audit, assurance, tax, advisory at a firm) values: audit file experience by client size, tax return complexity (T1/T2/T3, HST/GST, payroll), engagement management, client relationships, and specific software (CaseWare, TaxCycle, CCH iFirm, Profile, Cantax).
Industry / corporate accounting values: month-end close timelines, variance analysis, budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting to management, ERP system experience (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics), and cost accounting in manufacturing.
Your resume should be written for one of these two tracks — or you'll have a diluted document that doesn't clearly signal fit for either.
Accounting software — name every platform
Don't write "proficient in accounting software." Name the tools:
Public accounting: CaseWare Working Papers, TaxCycle, CCH iFirm, Profile Tax, Cantax, Xero, Dext (Receipt Bank), AgileCPA.
Corporate / SMB: QuickBooks Online/Desktop, Sage 50 / Sage 300, SAP FI/CO module, Oracle Financials, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Yardi (real estate), Sage Intacct.
Reporting and analysis: Excel (PivotTables, VLOOKUP, Power Query — name the functions), Power BI, Tableau, Adaptive Insights (for FP&A).
If a posting lists a specific ERP and you have it, that match often determines whether you get a call.
Writing strong accountant bullets
The formula: action verb + what you owned + scale/scope + outcome.
Weak: *Prepared financial statements and completed month-end close.*
Strong: *Prepared consolidated financial statements for a $45M manufacturing subsidiary, completing month-end close within 3 business days and delivering variance analysis reports to the CFO — identified a $200K overhead accrual error before Q3 board presentation.*
More examples:
- *Managed accounts payable for 400+ vendor accounts, processing $2.8M monthly and reducing outstanding invoices from 62 days to 38 days average.*
- *Prepared T2 corporate tax returns for 35 client files annually using TaxCycle, including SRED claims and capital cost allowance schedules.*
- *Reconciled intercompany transactions across 6 entities for a quarterly consolidation in SAP — reduced reconciling items from 120 to 14 in first review cycle.*
