Body (1–2 paragraphs)
Connect your top 2–3 qualifications to what the posting asks for. Use specific examples with numbers where possible. This is where you bring in context your resume doesn't have room for — the project backstory, the problem you solved, the decision you made. Do not just restate your resume bullets.
Closing paragraph
Express genuine interest in the opportunity, mention you'd welcome a chance to discuss the role, and thank them for their time. One or two sentences.

Canadian cover letter example — opening lines that work
Weak: *I am writing to express my interest in the Project Manager position at ABC Company.*
Better: *I'm applying for the Project Manager role posted on LinkedIn. Having led infrastructure rollouts across three Ontario municipalities in the past four years, I'm drawn to the scale of the work your team is doing in the GTA.*
The second version names the platform, establishes relevant experience immediately, and shows company-specific knowledge. A recruiter can make a shortlist decision from that paragraph alone.
What Canadian employers actually look for
Specificity. The cover letter that gets read is the one that clearly states what you did, where, with what result — not what you hope to achieve or how passionate you are.
Brevity. One page. Three to four paragraphs. Recruiters have read thousands of these. Every sentence needs to earn its place.
No repetition. If it's already in your resume, don't put it in your cover letter too. Use the cover letter to explain what the resume can't — gaps, career transitions, relocation, why this specific company.
Addressing the hiring manager by name. "Dear Hiring Manager" is acceptable. "Dear [Name]" is better. Check LinkedIn, the company website, or the job posting. If you can't find a name, "Dear Hiring Team" is a neutral alternative.
Canadian vs American cover letter differences
- Length: Both are one page. Canadian letters tend to be slightly more formal in tone.
- Personal info: Neither includes age, photo, or marital status.
- Salary expectations: Don't include unless the posting specifically asks.
- Follow-up: Canadian norms are slightly more reserved — "I look forward to discussing this role" is standard. Cold-calling to follow up on a cover letter is less common and not expected.
Cover letter for trades and warehouse roles
For trades, warehouse and production roles, the cover letter is shorter but still worth including when one is requested. Two paragraphs is sufficient:
Paragraph 1: Your certification (trade certificate, licence number), years of experience, and the type of work you've done.
Paragraph 2: One specific example — a project, a safety record, a piece of equipment you know well — that matches what the posting is asking for. Then a one-line closing.
What to skip
- "I am a hardworking, results-driven professional with a passion for excellence" — every cover letter says this. Cut it.
- Your full work history — the resume has that.
- Salary expectations — unless the posting asks.
- "I believe I would be a great fit" — show it, don't claim it.
- Your date of birth, SIN number, or marital status.
Cover letter length
Three to four paragraphs. Roughly 250–350 words. Never more than one page. If your cover letter is running long, cut the second paragraph in half — you're probably restating your resume.
