PSWHealthcare

A PSW resume in Canada needs to lead with your PSW Certificate (including the college name and graduation year), name the specific care settings and patient populations you've worked with, and show your safety certifications upfront. Ontario LTC employers in particular are screening hard for PointClickCare experience — if you have it, make it visible.

Why PSWs are in such high demand

Personal Support Workers are among the most critically short-staffed roles in the Ontario healthcare system. Long-term care, home care and retirement homes are all competing for qualified PSWs. That's good news for job seekers, but it also means employers have specific expectations and screening criteria. A generic resume won't stand out in a stack of 80 applications.

Certifications to list at the top

Put these in a visible section, not buried at the bottom:

  • PSW Certificate — include the college name and graduation year
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C — with issuing body and expiry date
  • WHMIS 2015
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) — if you have it
  • Alzheimer Society Dementia Care Training
  • Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA)
  • Safe Food Handling Certificate (if applicable to your setting)

The CPR expiry date matters. Some employers will reject an application if the cert is expired before they even read the experience section.

Skills worth naming specifically

Personal care: Safe client transfers and mobility assistance, mechanical lift operation (Hoyer, Sara Steady), personal hygiene and grooming, medication reminders and administration support, continence management.

Specialized care: Dementia and Alzheimer disease care, validation therapy, palliative and end-of-life care, wound care assistance.

Documentation: PointClickCare, electronic health records, care plan documentation. PointClickCare is the dominant EHR in Ontario LTC — if you've used it, say so explicitly.

Writing experience bullets for PSW roles

Generic: *Provided personal care to residents and assisted with daily activities.*

Better: *Provided daily personal care for 8–10 residents with dementia and mobility limitations, including safe transfers, hygiene support and meal assistance, in a 120-bed LTC setting.*

The better version tells the employer: your caseload size, the patient population, the specific care types, and the facility context. That's what creates a picture.

Salary in Ontario 2025

Ontario has significantly increased PSW wages in recent years. Entry level (0–2 years): $22–$26/hour. Experienced (2–5 years): $26–$30/hour. Senior PSW (5+ years): $30–$35/hour. Agency and temp positions sometimes pay higher base rates without benefits.

Major Ontario employers

Extendicare, Revera, Chartwell Retirement Residences, CarePartners (home care), Saint Elizabeth Health Care, SE Health, ParaMed.

Before you apply

Make sure your resume shows: your PSW certificate with institution, the care settings you've worked in (LTC, home care, retirement home, hospital), the patient populations you've supported, your safety certifications with dates, and any EHR systems you've used. That's the complete picture an Ontario employer needs to make a screening decision. Build your PSW resume and check the ATS score before applying.
